A to Z Challenge: D is for Documentaries

D

There are some really great documentaries covering a number of health related issues. I wanted to provide a list that spans a variety of topics, if you are interested I would suggest you check one of these out!

All can be found on Netflix ๐Ÿ“ฝย and I chose one to review. First, the list. If you click on the link you will find that I did omit one of the films dealing with GMOs. I would be happy to discuss my views on Genetically Modified Organisms, as this was central to both my doctoral and post doctoral work. But knowing that most are against GMOs and may not have the background for that opinion, I felt this was best to be left for another timeย ๐Ÿ˜Š

  1. Forks over Knives. If you are interested in the science behind the benefits of a plant based diet, this is a good one for you ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅ‘๐Ÿฅ’
  2. Food Inc. A good discussion on the evils of processed foods and how animals are treated in our food chain.
  3. Fed up. This is narrated by Katie Couric and explores the amount of sugar found in our processed food products, and how it all relates to the current obesity crisis.
  4. Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. This is more upbeat than the title would make it sound! This documentary focuses on individual stories. Inspiring tales of people who took control of their health by examining their eating habits and starting moderate exercise programs. This documentary spends time discussing “juicing”, which I will be honest, am not convinced this is a sustainable lifestyle. But the stories are great and inspiringย ๐Ÿ˜Š

This Australian man is also featured in “Hungry for Change”. His story is particularly interesting!ย 

 

5. Vegucated. If you are curious about going Vegan, this is for you! Participants embark on a 6 week program to find out what it really means to live a vegan lifestyle. It is an honest presentation of the difficulties faced by these dietary restrictions. It’s really funny too.

6. Cowspiracy. If you are looking for another reason to give up meat, this will terrify you ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

6. Bigger, Stronger, Faster. An in-depth look at the damaged caused by performance enhancing drugs, most notably steroid abuse in the body building community. It is shocking how pervasive these dangerous substances are in our population, and I am not just talking about professional level athletics.๐Ÿ˜”

 

Finally, Hungry for Change.

This film is a mix of expert advice and personal testimonials. I found the experts to be honest, clear and knowledgeable. The fact that many of them also went through weight and health issues made the information even more relatable.

The focus was on the lack of nutritional value in process foods, and how the food industry manipulates products to draw in consumers. Parallels to the tobacco industry, which knowingly manipulated nicotine levels to hook customers, were used to demonstrate the business side of our food supply.

Today’s processed products have more calories and less nutrition than our food supply of generations ago. Aspartame, MSG, high fructose corn syrup and preservatives, to prolong shipping and shelf life, are all discussed as factors that have eroded the quality of our food base. Again, this documentary promotes juicing quite a bit. Perhaps we should explore that on J day!!๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’•
